  • Kerala - State With Surplus Oxygen Amid Mounting Covid Crisis

    3:30

Just 100 meters into Thiruvananthapuram Medical College complex, is the liquid medical oxygen plant that caters to patients in ICUs. Instead of the earlier 20KL capacity, it's now double at 40KL capacity. And this isn't an exception in Kerala. However, it is at variance with the situation in the rest of the country where there is a scramble for oxygen with several hospitals reporting acute shortages.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, interacting today with the Chief Ministers of 10 states suffering the worst of the nationwide Covid spiral, interrupted Arvind Kejriwal to object to the discussion being televised by his office. My belief is that if there is a national plan against Covid then the centre and all state governments can work together in that direction. Our departed souls..., Mr Kejriwal said, but stopped as PM Modi cut in. What is happening... this is strictly against our tradition, our protocol... that some Chief Minister is showing a live telecast of an in-house meeting, said the Prime Minister sternly.

  • India Covid crisis: families plea for help amid oxygen shortages and mass cremations

    2:10

India's underfunded health system is on the brink of collapse as the world's worst coronavirus surge wears out the nation. This week the number of recorded cases passed 300,000 a day, along with more than 2,000 deaths - which is close to twice the daily deaths India experienced during the first peak of the virus between July and September 2020.
Hospitals in Delhi have now issued SOS alerts on Friday, saying they had only a few hours’ supply of oxygen left and pleading for government help, while social media was flooded with requests for oxygen cylinders, shared by people seeking urgent care for their relatives.

India, the world's second most populous nation, has confirmed 16 million cases so far, second only to the US. The country's real death toll from the virus is thought to be significantly higher than official figures, amid reports of some state governments fudging data, and crematorium equipment in some states melting due to the constant heat of fires burning day and night.
