Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

  • Del McCoury Band: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    19:26

Aug. 1, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- There is a moment, near the top of this Tiny Desk concert — when three voices gather 'round a single microphone to deliver the chorus of That Ol' Train — that is so pure and beautiful it made my eyes well up with tears when we filmed it. Not since bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley played the Tiny Desk in 2009 have I felt vocals resonate so deeply.

Del McCoury is another bluegrass legend, singing, playing guitar and writing songs for the past 60 years, including his days with the father of bluegrass, Mr. Bill Monroe. The Del McCoury Band itself is 50 years strong, and these days includes Del's sons Robbie on banjo and Ronnie on mandolin and vocals. All are astonishing players, here joined by the five-time award-winning fiddling of Jason Carter and this year's International Bluegrass Music Association bass player of the year Alan Bartram.

For their visit to the Tiny Desk, the group brought along some traveling songs. The first (of two) train tunes, That Ol' Train, comes from their new album Del McCoury Still Sings Bluegrass, while their closing gospel tale All Aboard is a staple from 2001's Del and the Boys. The other (a motorcycle song), 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, was written by another master of his craft, British folk icon Richard Thompson, and has been a part of Del's repertoire for a while now. It shows not only the deep connection that bluegrass has to British folk music, but also Del McCoury's willingness to keep his sound fresh all these years on.

These are story songs; Del is, of course, quite the storyteller, taking his time between them to reminisce. At 79 years old, he's got a lot of them tell.

    Set List

    That Ol' Train
    1952 Vincent Black Lightning
    All Aboard

    Musicians
Del McCoury (vocals, guitar), Ronnie McCoury (mandolin), Rob McCoury (banjo), Alan Bartram (bass), Jason Carter (fiddle)

This is another bluegrass video from my library. When I worked at WISN-TV in Milwaukee during the late 70's, I arranged for Tony Trischka, 5-string banjo phenom, to play during our noon show with Howard & Rosemary Guernette. Tony is accompanied by Dede Wyland on guitar and Mark Hembree on base. Mark and Tony played with Monroe Doctrine long ago, too. They perform Groundspeed and Salt Creek. Enjoy

We kindly invite you to support Playing For Change and access free downloads and exclusive videos:

We're excited to share this Live Outside video from sister-duo Larkin Poe performing a remake of Robert Johnson's Come On in My Kitchen, which was featured on their 2017 album, Peach. As told by the duo, We're two southern sisters: born in Tennessee, raised in Georgia. Having grown up in the south, the blues has always been a huge part of our musical upbringing. In the past few years, we've been inspired to strip it back to our roots and pay tribute to the music that raised us... And Come On in My Kitchen was one of the first blues tunes we ever learned how to play.

Turn it up and let the music rock your soul.

    5:20

Written more than 50 years ago, the Bob Dylan classic The Times They Are A-Changin' is as relevant today as it was then. We invite you to enjoy this touching rendition performed by Brandi Carlile along with Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) from our recent event, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the UN, Peace Through Music. Let's stand strong, united in one love, and be the positive change we want to see in the world.

This massively popular Binghamton-based five-piece has climbed to the top of the Americana scene on the strength of killer live shows, never-ending tours, and a mutual trust that inspires courageous songwriting and explosive arrangements. Their fiddle-banjo-acoustic guitar-string bass instrumentation indicates bluegrass, but when you mix in their punk rock attitude, you get stringband rock that pulses with fiery, joyful passion. 2019 saw the release of Tree of Shade, their first album with a major producer. Working alongside Simone Felice, the band stripped back to the essence of each song, developing a new finesse and nuance that takes them higher than ever before.

Caffè Lena offers extraordinary music in an intimate venue steeped in history. It has been in continuous operation longer than any other folk club in the USA. First opened in 1960 in Saratoga Springs NY, the Caffè's early years were entwined with the social movements of that era. Emerging artists such as Bob Dylan, The Freedom Singers, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris and Don McLean took their turn on the stage, alongside esteemed veterans such as Clarence Ashley, Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James and Pete Seeger. The venue has been called “An American Treasure” by the Library of Congress, and has received recognition from the GRAMMY Foundation for its contribution to American music.

    LYRICS

    Everything is open
    Nothing is set in stone
    Rivers turn to ocean
    Oceans tide you home
Home is where your heart is
But your heart had to roam
    Drifting over bridges
    Never to return
    Watching bridges burn

    You're driftwood floating underwater
    Breaking into pieces pieces pieces
Just driftwood hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you bind you grind you

    Nobody is an island
    Everyone has to go
    Pillars turn to butter
    Butterflying low
Low is where your heart is
But your heart has to grow
    Drifting under bridges
    Never with the flow

And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line
So I'm sorry that you turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long long time

    Everywhere there's trouble
    Nowhere's safe to go
    Pushes turn to shovel's
    Shoveling the snow
    Frozen you have chosen
The path you wish to go
    Drifting now forever
    And forever more
    Until you reach your shore

    You're driftwood floating underwater
    Breaking into pieces pieces pieces
Just driftwood hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you bind you grind you
And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line

So I'm sorry that you turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long long time
You've been drifting for a long long time
You've been drifting for a long long
Drifting for a long long time

    Lyrics:
Lay it out, right down in the floor
The way you hurt in the morning
And when you cried in the store
Well I know that you're hoping it won't be that slow
But how you loved me baby, I will never even know

So lay like you do love, lay like you will
Poor me some water and I'll find me a pill
Cover my shoulders and I'll fix up my frown
And I won't get goosebumps every time you come around

Walk me down, walk me down the hallway
Why don't you throw me down the stairs?
Could you ever feel something, would I ever be the same?
Cause that's what you're doing when you treat me this way

    (Chorus)

Remember this, I held you up
Had to hold my head so low just to sip that loving cup
Was that you at the red light? Are you taking care?
I know he waits in the carport, I know you're kissing him there.

    (Chorus)
