Queen - A Kind Of Magic (Live At Wembley Stadium, Friday 11 July 1986)

  • Freddie Mercury Transformation - From Baby To 45 Years Old

    4:52

Freddie Mercury, original name Farrokh Bulsara, (born September 5, 1946, Stone Town, Zanzibar—died November 24, 1991, Kensington, London, England), British rock singer and songwriter whose flamboyant showmanship and powerfully agile vocals, most famously for the band Queen, made him one of rock’s most dynamic front men.

Bulsara was born to Parsi parents who had emigrated from India to Zanzibar, where his father worked as a clerk for the British government. Influenced by the hard-edged, blues-based style of rock acts such as Cream and Jimi Hendrix, Bulsara began singing with bands in London. He also became friends with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor of the band Smile, and in 1970, when Smile’s lead singer quit, Bulsara replaced him. He soon changed the group’s name to Queen and his own to Freddie Mercury. Bassist John Deacon joined the following year. Incorporating elements of both heavy metal and glam rock, the band debuted on record with Queen (1973), which was followed by Queen II (1974). Despite an impressive blend of majestic vocal harmonies and layered virtuosic guitar work, Queen initially failed to attract much notice beyond the United Kingdom. The album Sheer Heart Attack (1974), however, shot up the international charts, and A Night at the Opera (1975) sold even better. The band’s ambitious approach to both songwriting and studio production was epitomized by the latter album’s mock-operatic single “Bohemian Rhapsody,” one of a number of Queen compositions written principally by Mercury. The song spent nine weeks atop the British singles chart, and its accompanying promotional film helped the music industry recognize its future in video. Spectacular success followed in 1977 with “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You”—which became ubiquitous anthems at sporting events in Britain and the United States.

Although Queen’s commercial fortunes had begun to wane by mid-decade, the band arguably reached its apotheosis as a live act with a stellar performance at the charity concert Live Aid in 1985. That same year Mercury released the solo record Mr. Bad Guy, which took musical inspiration from disco. Mercury later appeared on the sound track of Dave Clark’s science-fiction musical Time (1986) and teamed with Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballe for the semi-operatic album Barcelona (1988). In 1991 Mercury, who had engaged in relationships with both men and women, announced that he had been diagnosed with AIDS. He died a day later from complications related to the disease. Until shortly before his death, Mercury had continued to record with Queen, and he was posthumously featured on the band’s final album, Made in Heaven (1995).

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018 biographical film about the British rock band Queen) has grossed over $401 million worldwide on a production budget of about $50 million. It is the highest-grossing musical biographical film of all time. The film received mixed reviews from critics; its portrayals of Mercury's life and sexuality and of the other band members were criticised, but Rami Malek's performance and the music sequences received praise. Several historical inaccuracies were also highlighted.

Queen's Greatest Hits (released worldwide on 26 October 1981) was an instant success, peaking at number one on the UK Albums Chart for four weeks. It has spent 833 weeks in the UK Charts, and is the best-selling album of all time in the UK, selling over six million copies. It is certified eight times platinum in the United States, and is Queen's most commercially successful album worldwide with over 25 million copies sold, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien hailed the UK edition of Greatest Hits as impeccable and absolutely genius, while British journalist Brian Viner called it the greatest album of all time.

This remix is very close to the final album version. The bass lines seem to be a bit more prominent in the mix and the overall sound is a little less muddy. Freddie singing that's okay! has been removed right before Bowie sings, it's the terror of knowing... It is unknown who did this remix. It is rumored that this is actually an old mix from around the Hot Space time period.
    Info taken from

This video is a new mix between the Wembley version (12/7/86), the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert version at the same stadium in 1992, and the now old video made by DoRo for Under Pressure (Rah Mix) in 1999.

    Hammer To Fall: 14:16

At this very special festival, Queen were one of many dozens of acts and performers who's all proceeds went to raise money for Ethiopia which was in a famine!

Each performance was only allowed to have 20 minutes on the stage, there was also a rule that no backing tracks or a soundcheck were permitted. This gig launched Queen back into popularity with the recent Sun City in '84 controversy and of course the Hot Space album in '82. This is the most important gig Queen ever played and Freddie was the main attraction!

For this upload I've used the Radio broadcast source that was very kindly recorded and uploaded to Queenzone by Owen Smith! AT certain parts (during the intro, Crazy Little Thing Called Love & Is This The World We Created I've used the official 2007 DVD mix due to feedback and the BBC engineers obliviously talking during the broadcast to millions and millions of people, whoops!)

They played the shortened medley version of Bohemian Rhapsody (like they would do from '75 to '76), this is most definitively the best version of the medley with Freddie hitting those studio phrasing notes for the first ever time, this led straight into Radio Ga Ga which is the best ever version with Freddie getting those studio notes perfectly! Following was Freddie's short improv with the audience which is also excellent! Following was Hammer To Fall which again is the best ever version with Freddie nailing the almost all of the key notes and also ad-libs a short C#5, the only small blemish is at the end where Roger's timing doesn't sync with everyone else but he can be forgiven as he mentions in an interview that the sound on stage was bad! Crazy Little Thing Called Love is next and it's a wonderful performance with Freddie getting some great notes in there! We Will Rock You follows which has been shortened down to only the first verse and chorus but is still a great performance with Freddie nailing the A4 on man someday! Then what follows is the most surprising and amazing performances of We Are The Champions and is if the not the best version! Firstly he hits the first Bb4 before the chorus but he absolutely nails the C5 (although just slightly beaten by Monterrey's C5), then the completely unexpected happens he nails the second We Are The Champions part in the original octave not only once but three times! At the end of this performance there's a few rough moments but those can be forgiven when you've been singing your greatest in 20 minutes!

Later that day Freddie and Brain return to perform; Is This The World We Created which theme fits well into Live Aid, again this is a great performance!

    ENJOY!!

Note 1: I've also included as extras Queen's introduction by Mel Smith & Griff Rhys Jones, the introduction for Is This The World We Created by John Hurt and Do They Know It's Christmas which is performed with most of the acts that day. Also during that performance Freddie only got two words in as they didn't hand him the mic at any point, they must have been jealous!

All this extra footage was gotten from
So big thanks to them for including these extra shots!

Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.

He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.

All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.

This memorable video, Directed by David Mallet, accompanied Freddie Mercury's seventh solo single. This is a cover version originally recorded by The Platters in the 1960s. The two 'lady' backing vocalists are none other than Freddie's good friends Peter Straker and a certain Mr Roger Taylor, from a band called Queen. The single was released in the UK on 23 February 1987.
