  • Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly

The fastest way to get faster on drums:

Want to see Larnell Lewis hear a drumless song once and nail it, form and feature, on his first run through? Hit that play button!

How can Larnell learn songs so quickly? How did he learn almost the entire We Like It Here album by Snarky Puppy on a 7.5 hour flight to record in Europe?

Watch him work through his process of listening to the song’s details, understanding sections and forms, and looking for shots and nuances.

As Larnell says, it’s important to practice listening and imagining yourself playing the drums – mental practice was huge for him in this exercise but is also crucial when he’s away from the drums. He also listens to what the other musicians are playing and understands that when those things happen, “you have certain options you can draw from on the kit.”

Think you can nail it on the first go like Larnell? The song is called ‘Chick’s Pain’ by Mathieu Fiset and is available in the Drumeo Members’ area!

    More from NPR Music:
    Tiny Desk Concerts:
    Twitter:

Nov. 20, 2019 | Colin Marshall -- Seconds before we hit record, Snarky Puppy's bandleader, Michael League leaned in to ask if he could do a little crowd work. I suspect he waited until the last second on purpose, but it's been easy to trust this band when they have an idea, judging by the three Grammy Awards they get to dust off at home after every tour run.

What resulted was a Tiny Desk first: League divided the audience into two sections, one side clapping out a 3/4 beat and the other half a 4/4 beat, creating a polyrhythm that I'm sure a handful of coworkers didn't feel so confident trying to pull off. But this band pulls you in with simple instruction and a little faith.

Snarky Puppy has been a force for a while now, earning the ears of millions for more than a decade. And their secret sauce? A long-simmered recipe of jazz, funk and gospel. The band started as college friends in the jazz program at the University of North Texas back in 2003. But the formative era came a few years later, after League became a part of the gospel scene in Dallas and eventually brought the jazz students to church, where music plays a different role than it does in the classroom. In the pulpit, it's a channel for spiritual healing, a communal experience between players and congregation. As an experiment, League pulled his jazz friends and his gospel bandmates into one ensemble, where the two groups bonded together and established ground-zero for building the sonic identity of Snarky Puppy.

Thirteen albums later, you can still hear these gospel and jazz orbits crashing into each other. They're masters of theme and variation, offering anyone with a listening ear a place to grab hold. And people do. They're a band whose lyric-less melodies are still yelled (sung back) to them at their concerts around the world, as a shared catharsis for everyone in the room.

On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The project was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts organization that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. The hall brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.

The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is working daily to pull from every social and economic class of the Roanoke community and create the next wave of real, human musicians. They host low cost or free after-school programs for any interested young people filled with visits by guest artists, private instrumental instruction, and recording training. Wafting out of the little studios and rehearsal rooms on the third floor of Jefferson Center, you can hear Afro-beat in Swahili, hip-hop in Liberian Kreyol, the blues coming from the guitar of a 13 year-old prodigy, and the undeniable sound of young musicians growing. It's a thing that needs to be supported at all costs across this country, and by purchasing this record, you've done it.

A portion of every sale will go to the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.

  • Larnell Lewis Drum Solo with Snarky Puppy

    5:17

An excerpt from Snarky Puppy live at the Cheltenham Festival 2017. Larnell Lewis starts a ripping solo and breaks his kick pedal; he manages to change the pedal (without leaving the kit) and finish the solo in style.

The day after the gig I saw Larnell perform again with Micheal League and Bill Laurence; they both commented on Lewis' ability to 'make the best' of the moment and his world class showmanship.

Larnell Lewis has a magic in his drumming that nobody else can replicate, and he shares his talents in this playthrough of What About Me from Snarky Puppy's 2014 release, We Like It Here (GUMUK Ltd - Composer: Michael League)

We could rave about Larnell for paragraphs (he's also a DrumeoCOACH for Edge members), but you should just watch it and see. Check out his creative accent placements and sonic cymbal choices.

It's a song that pushed my limits when I first encountered it, he said. That's not all: he had to learn an entire album's worth of Snarky Puppy tunes while on a plane (they called him with 24 hours' notice to record We Like It Here).

  • Snarky Puppy - Lingus

    14:39

I react to Snarky Puppy for the first time with their song Lingus (We Like It Here). Larnell Lewis once again being a drum god with his band of equal musical gods is truly and insane sight/sound to behold! Thanks for your continued support, I hope you enjoy the video and please check out my other videos!

  • The Crying Machine - Steve Vai

    7:47

Steve Vai and the String Theories band perform the song The Crying Machine from the new DVD Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are.

The show was recorded and filmed at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, MN before a sold-out audience as part of Vais successful Sound Theories world tour.

Vai is widely known for both his unprecedented guitar playing techniques and the unique design of his signature series Ibanez Jem guitar. But his fans have become inextricably drawn to his melodic depth, and dynamic stage performance. The continued evolution of his craft is made apparent in the astonishing musicianship presented in Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are. The 2 hour and 40 minute set contains several new tracks and re-orchestrated pieces culled from his rich catalog. His guitar-wielding extravaganza in 'The Murder' is an artistic performance piece that must be seen to be believed.

The addition of virtuoso violinists Alex DePue and Ann Marie Calhoun add a dazzling dimension to Vai's compositions and stage show, delivering fans the unexpected edge they always expect. Other world-class musicians chosen for Vai's band are: Bryan Beller (bass), Jeremy Colson (drums), Dave Weiner (guitar and sitar) and Zack Wiesinger (lap steel).

Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and audio CD now!
