Rivers of Babylon is a rastafarian song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae group The Melodians in 1970. The Melodians' original versions of the song appeared in the sound track to the 1972 movie The Harder They Come and the 1999 Nicolas Cage movie Bringing Out the Dead. It became popularized in Europe by the 1978 Boney M. cover version.

A canção é baseada no Salmo 137 da Bíblia, um hino que expressa o lamento do povo judeu no exílio, após a conquista de Jerusalém em 586 a.C.. Os rios da Babilónia que são referidos na canção são o rio Eufrates, seus afluentes, e o rio Tigre. A canção também possui fragmentos literais do Salmo 19:14.

Rivers of Babylon se tornou o segundo maior sucesso de vendagem no Reino Unido em 1978, quando a música Brown girl in the Ring, que também compunha o disco, também se tornava sucesso nas rádios. Foi, na época, o único single além de Mull of Kintyre (gravada por Paul McCartney), a vender mais de dois milhões de cópias no Reino Unido. Eles novamente conseguiram mais de 1 milhão de cópias vendidas no Reino Unido com sua versão de um clássico do calypso, Mary's Boychild (anteriormente gravada por Harry Belafonte).

Boney M é um grupo de disco' music europeu, que teve um grande sucesso durante os anos 70. Em 1986, dez anos após o lançamento de sua formação mais conhecida, o grupo já acumulava 18 discos de platina, 15 discos de ouro e cerca de 150 milhões de unidades vendidas pelo mundo. O grupo se desfez naquele ano, porém o sucesso de alguns remixes (como Daddy Cool - anniversary remix) continuou. Tentou-se recriar o grupo com nova formação, porém o sucesso continuou a ser o da formação original.
Entre o final dos anos 1980 e 1990 grupo dividiu-se e um veredicto de tribunal autorizou todos os quatro membros originais do grupo -- as três cantoras e Bobby Farrell -- a dar concertos com o nome Boney M.
Em Portugal, os Boney M. de Farrell atuaram em Agosto de 2007 no XXII Festival do Marisco de Olhão, em 2008 no Carnaval no Casino de Lisboa, e também na passagem de ano no Casino de Espinho.

Morte de Bobby Farrell
O cantor da banda de disco music Boney M., o holandês Bobby Farrell, morreu dia 30 de dezembro de 2010 em um quarto de hotel em São Petersburgo - Rússia aos 61 anos, onde estava para fazer shows, anunciou o empresário do artista, John Seine. A autópsia feita revelou que o motivo da morte foi insuficiência cardíaca.

Farrell uniu-se em 1976 ao grupo alemão Boney M., composto por outras três cantoras e que lançou sucessos internacionais como Sunny, Ma Baker, Rivers of Babylon e Hooray, hooray, It is Holi-holiday. Chegaram a vender mais de 150 milhões de discos no mundo todo.

O líder da banda dava personalidade ao grupo por seus passos inovadores, que combinavam perfeitamente ao ousado estilo das cantoras. Casado e com dois filhos, em 1994 - ano em que se divorciou - foi condenado por um tribunal holandês por tentar queimar a esposa após borrifar gasolina nela.

Bobby Farrell, uma figura atlética que vestia roupas brilhantes que deixavam à mostra o seu tórax musculoso, foi considerado um bailarino fora de série do grupo Boney M, famoso nos anos 1970 pelo seu tipo de música disco.

Lionel Richie is an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and actor. Beginning in 1968, he was lead singer and saxophonist of the musical group Commodores; established as a popular soul group. Over time, Richie wrote and sang more romantic, easy-listening ballads such as Easy, Three Times a Lady, Still, and the tragic breakup ballad Sail On. By the late 1970s he had begun to accept songwriting commissions from other artists. He composed Lady for Kenny Rogers, which hit #1 in 1980, and produced Rogers' album Share Your Love the following year. Richie and Rogers maintained a strong friendship in later years.

Also1981 Richie sang the theme song for the film Endless Love, a duet with Diana Ross. Issued as a single. The song topped the Pop charts all over the world, and became one of Motown's biggest hits (in the US it sold 2 million copies and became a platinum single record).

Its success encouraged Richie to branch out into a full-fledged solo career in 1982. Afterwards came the success of “Truly,” “All Night Long,” “Hello,” and “Say You (Say Me”) for which he won his Oscar and a Golden Globe. His 1982 self-titled album established a run of platinum plus albums throughout the 80’s, with 1986’s Dancing On The Ceiling “ becoming a pop and R&B classic. He also found time to co-write with Michael Jackson what eventually would become pop’s most famous anthem, the Live-Aid tune “We Are The World.”

Richie has won several awards, among them Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for Truly in 1982. In 1982 he was nominated for Best Original Song for the film Endless Love. He won the Album of the Year for Can't Slow Down and Producer of the Year (Non-Classical) in 1984. Lionel Richie has won four Grammy Awards including Song of the Year in 1985 for We Are the World. Nominated for two Golden Globe awards and won one. In 1986 he was nominated and won the award for Best Original Song for the film White Nights.

He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.

In 2012, Lionel went back to his Tuskegee roots by re-working some of his biggest hits as duets with country superstars such as Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, and Little Big Town. The album was one the biggest of his career reaching #1 on the Billboard Top 200 list and garnering huge critical acclaim

THE STORY BEHIND THIS PERFORMANCE

Stevie Wonder landed in England on the Saturday morning of the concert and went straight to Wembley Stadium, where a room was prepared for him and his band to warm up. He was to appear in the evening after UB40. His appearance had not been announced.
UB40 were finishing their set on the main stage, and Wonder's equipment was set up, plugged in and ready to be rolled on after a 10-minute act on a side stage. He was about to walk up the ramp to the stage when it was discovered that the hard disc of his synclavier, carrying all 25 minutes of synthesised music for his act, was missing. He said he could not play without it, turned round, walked down the ramp crying, with his band and other members of his entourage following him, and out of the stadium.
There was an urgent need to fill the gap he had left and Tracy Chapman, who had already performed her act, agreed to appear again. The two appearances shot her to stardom, with two songs from her recently-released first album, Fast Car and Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution. Before the concert, she had sold about 250,000 albums. In the following two weeks, she was said to have sold two million.

We Are the World é um LP gravado em Janeiro de 1985 por 45 dos maiores nomes da música norte-americana, com o objetivo de arrecadação de fundos para o combate da fome na África. Os 45 astros formaram o grupo USA for Africa. O single, o LP e o clipe renderam cerca de 55 milhões de dólares.

Inspirado pela reunião que ficou conhecida como Band Aid, organizou a gravação do single We Are the World, escrito por Michael Jackson. O single foi lançado em 1985 para arrecadar fundos para a campanha USA for Africa, em benefício de famílias da África.
