This week i assembled the most gorgeous machined Aluminium Bearing Housings Made by Alexcnc from the MMX Team.
They are adjustable for the Depthing of the gears. We are also implementing the new PBS - Product Breakdown System for the Whole MMX. Chris, the new project manager has introduced me to the sacred lands of Excel heaven and although there is a lot of initial work we have to do to make this function properly, the long term efficiency will improve a lot! We are taking the MMX from being a one off DIY maker project to being a scalable, fully fledged - ready to build for any competent group of people - machine. Its really great!

Enjoy and have a great day!

  • Marble Conveyor Belt Completed! - Marble Machine X #78

    7:30

The Marble Conveyor Belt is Completed and it delivers Perfectly.
    - lifts 8 marbles per crank turn.
    - thanks to it being driven by ratchets and pistons, it makes a short halt to load and unload the marbles, on exactly the same spot every time.
    - The pistons are connected to the crank shaft with a 2:1 gear reduction which means that the conveyor belt go in time with the music, and in half time. I can even use the mechanical sounds from the ratchets and the marbles climbing the fish stair to create parts of the beats.
    - I only had one kick drum channel up and running so the kick drum plays on 2-4 like a snare normally would. Sounds a little strange but I just made this piece of music to demonstrate the concepts are working. (no music you hear in the videos are going to be used for the album, its quick and dirty functional pieces for the videos only)
    - Its been a journey but we are now on our way. Again.
    - the throw of the pistons s 40mm, the pitch of the chain is 15,875x2 mm, an imperial value, and it happens to be exactly twice the marble diameter. All this makes it possible to lift exactly one row of marbles per crank turn. The ratchets move 40 mm but only grabs onto the chain to move it exactly 31,75mm per crank turn.
The carriers are flame polished cnc:ed acrylic
    - The chain was custom made in Japan and I waited 5 months for it to be delivered. haha. Of all the time consuming darlings on the MMX I love the conveyor belt /fish stair combo the most.
    - the marbles looks like they are stuck over the demagnetiser wheel, this is by design, as soon new marbles come into the pipes from below, the marbles are slowly pushed over the demag wheel which ensures perfect demagnetisation.

    - thanks for watching and believing in the project, good luck with everything that you are doing!

    Martin

    8:42

Foley artists use objects to create sounds based on a character’s movements and interactions in movies and TV shows. Sometimes, they will find themselves making sounds for animals. Marko Costanzo is a veteran Foley artist for c5 Sound, Inc. He has who worked on movies like “Ice Age,” “Life of Pi,” and “True Grit.” Costanzo explained how complicated it was to make the sounds of a dragonfly flapping its wings in “Men in Black,” and how he captured the footsteps of a dog at different ages in “Marley & Me.” Then, we showed him an animal clip he has never seen before and had him come up with the proper sounds on the spot.

  • EXTREMELY Rare Lighter Restoration, World War 2 - D-day 1944!

    13:02

Restoration of a VERY RARE LIGHTER from world war II. This is a Normandy beach area metal detector ground found, with a special emblem attached to it. See me restore this war relic.

    ABOUT THE RARE LIGHTER
This is a EXTREMELY rare and special war relic probably from the World war 2. The lighter was very worn out before the restoration. According to the donator it was found near the coast of the Utah beach in Normandy France with metal detector equipment. This is one of the beaches where the allies landed the coast at D-day June 6. 1944 – So my guess is that it has been in the ground since the days around D-day 1944.

    THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by cleaning the emblem who was attached to the lighter. I was VERY surprised when I saw how cool this emblem looked. I guess it is an old US marine emblem from world war 1 or 2 but I am not sure. I heated the lighter to remove all the parts which were soldered to the lighter and there after I removed all tiny parts. They were very hard to remove. I guess the many years on Normandy beach in France has been harsh to it.

I sandblasted the brass body and grinded the whole lighter with 500, 1000 and 1500 grit. I polished it to mirror blank and added all the small part again.

The beautiful US marine emblem was cleaned in vinegar before it was attached to the lighter again. This is such a beautiful war relic and I hope that you enjoy this restoration video.

  • Playing the CYBER BASS

    11:42

    Playing the CYBER BASS
This Custom Bass guitar for the Marble Machine X is a 4 string bass built on a 5 string neck, 4 Mics (one per string) and today I am adding the FUNKALIZER. An adjustable felt pad that can be pushed onto the strings and dampening the sound. This is designed to shorten the notes when the Cyber Bass is played by the Marble Machine X.

Take care and Good luck with everything you are doing! Martin

The 3d printed Metal Wings/marble guides you can see is printed by Desktop Metal and designed by Phillip Brown, i will cover them more in upcoming episodes!

  • How To Program a Music Box - Hole Punch Tutorial

    14:55

In this video i show you how to punch holes and program music for the 20-note music box set and the 30-note music box set.
It is sometime a daunting process and it can drive you crazy in no time. I have been programming these music boxes for a long time now and wanted to share the methods i have developed to make the process less daunting and drive you less crazy. These music boxes are available everywhere and if you want to try them out and make your own songs this tutorial might help along the way!

It took a full day to cut these holes, longer time because i filmed it but without filming it would still take about 4-8 hours.

If you have advice or ideas on my two questions that i am asking in the video (laser cutting software & 20-note music box continuous paper roll) the best place to send me ideas is actually by posting a picture on the Marble Machine Development photo sharing page:

The fun thing with the photo sharing page is that everyone can see any conversations on these topics.
We will redesign our website in the upcoming months and I would like to start a forum on the new website to discuss things like this publicly, until then the photo sharing page is the closest thing to a forum we have right now.

I am not sure which Wintergatan Wednesday the final version of the Music Box song will be played, i said in the next video but that will probably not happen as we are working with MMX now.

Good luck with the Music Boxes! Martin

  • Marble Mountain, a themed marble machine

    7:27

    For inquiries, please email Ben.R.Tardif@gmail.com
    Follow me on Instagram:

Marble Mountain is a large marble machine still under construction. It consists of 25 sections that mesh together to form one kinetic sculpture. Every element is themed (or will be upon completion) to an aspect of my life or to something that I find interesting. Some of the elements include a roller coaster, ski jump, Times Square, Lombard Street, and a skatepark. It took 3 years to get to this point of being able to turn it on and watch it go, and I will continue to work on it and get it fully completed.

A detailed history of the progress can be found at:

    Facts:
    -It has a footprint of 12' x 8' and stands 8' tall
-The material of the tracks and supports consist almost entirely of wood
-Everything is custom-made from materials bought mostly from craft and hardware stores (mainly Michaels and Home Depot)
-The lift is 11 feet long, holds 90 marbles at once, and rotates at 1 revolution per second (60 RPM)
-It takes at least 250 marbles to keep it running without delay, but looks better with 300
-There are 32 possible paths for the marbles
-There are 14 rockers that distribute the marbles onto the different paths
-The first year and a half of construction happened in my apartment before moving to a small warehouse
-The original design was smaller and not as cool, so a redesign took place making it much bigger and morphed into a half-conical shape with the lift right down the middle
-I do know how much it cost to make thus far but even my wife doesn't know that number
-It takes just under an hour to set up or tear down Marble Mountain
-Since it is modular, I could remove a section and rebuild it as something else as long as the tracks matched up with the other pieces

All income will be used to build the Marble Machine 2.0, a full sized but transportable Marble Machine that we can tour with! I am going to build it in seven modular horcrux parts, every part has its own case. When we are playing we will arrive the day before the show to assemble it. And we should bring the Music Box as well and synch the two machines up in a plywood duet... just have to succeed with the MM2.0 build first... wish us luck and take care, all the best// Martin & Wintergatan

Ps. I have named this instrument The Modulin because i see it as a mix of a MODular syntheseiser and a vioLIN - MODULIN. We will film more videos to explain how it works. I am also building a version 2.0 of this Modulin for stability, it is very cobbled together at this stage and it has broken down on us on stage several times...

  • Electric Motor? - Marble Machine X #114

    13:30

I am attaching an electric Motor to power the Marble Machine X,
The primary reason is to exclude human errors in the power input while calibrating the musical timing. The Electric motor provides a constant torque and will increase the accuracy of these timing tests. The Motor is placed on a temporary location just to make these tests. (i wouldnt put it there in plain sight if it was included in final design)

The secondary reason to include a motor in the would be the extra tightness of the music, enabling stage dive mode and frees up my hands to control the machine. Or play guitar solo with the Marble Machine X backing me up.

Adding an electric motor permanently to the drive train changes the identity of the Marble Machine X quite a lot and it is not a decision i make easily. I have been actively against this during the whole development process but perhaps, perhaps, the identity change is for the better when all pros and cons are added up. Steam punk level decreases, musical tightness increases. And what cons would actually outweigh the stage dive mode pro?

Do we want nostalgia or do we want groove?
Do we want to be very principal about aesthetics or do we want to go for functional?
These are the eternal questions we can entertain ourselves with in this process.
With the motor hidden away inside the machine and with Alex CNCs magical electric skills allowing the motor to act as a helper maybe we can have the best of both worlds.

The longer i work on the project the more i tend to go for function over form - we have built so much attitude into the design already that we wont risk killing it all by making things a bit easier at this stage. But again, motor is a fundamental change.

    Huge thanks to Alex:

►Alex Füßl | Alex CNC | Munich, Germany

But for the timing tests that are up next there is no question - this motor will be a game changer for MMX accuracy. Even when only used for calibration and the machine is manually cranked afterwards.

Take care and good luck with everything you are doing / Martin

  • Playing Tight Music? - Marble Machine X #115

    20:31

How tight music can the Marble Machine X actually play?

Thats a question i been asking myself everyday during this project and today we are getting a bit closer to an answer.
We have built in a lot of calibration possibilities in the design of the MMX and the goal with this video is to show you how we can calibrate the timing in several ways.

Next up is bass guitar and funnels, when all the funnels are connected the machine is almost completed in its basic design There will be a lot of small things that needs to be added here and there before we can move on to the final stage which is audio. In this video you are hearing the machine sounding through a variety of non intended recorded methods, most often played through my speakers and then into the wireless mic sitting on me and things are booming a lot in my ill sounding stone room. We are doing a total overhaul acoustic treatment of my studio this spring together with which will deal with this in a wonderful way.

Thanks for following the build and good luck with everything you are doing! // Martin

Q: Why isn´t the Marble Machine on the stage?
A: Apart from not really being transportable, the Marble Machine does not work well enough to be used on stage for the moment, too many design mistakes combined prohibits that. BUT! We are going to build a full sized Marble Machine 2.0 that we can tour with in the future. First we are going to record our new album and release that, after the release we will build the new modular Marble Machine 2.0. And then we will tour the world with the new record and the new Machine!

In this video you can see how I have tried to make a BIG MOTORIZED MARBLE MACHINE by using 4 marble run kits from ROBOTIME.

The wood quality and the level of detail in these laser-cut wooden puzzles by ROKR is amazing and the fact that all pieces fit together perfectly, without glue, is making the built a very satisfying process.

After about 3 hours for each kit, I had 4 fully functioning marble run machines. A lift or a gear, lifts the marbles and releases them to various separate tracks. The idea is to get the marbles at the top and then gravity will do the rest.

The next step was for me to find a way to motorize and connect these machines with each other in order to create
one big motorized marble run machine.

In order to power the machines I have used four 12V motors which are connected to the electrical socket with a transformer to step down the voltage AC.

As soon as I finished the connections and pressed the ON button the result was really satisfying. I had created a big marble machine that I could watch running for hours.

I really enjoyed this project and I trust that you will like it as well.

    Best regards,
    4THECRAFT

Wintergatan Marble Machine - Minecraft cover

When I saw the Wintergatan Marble Machine in March, I was totally speechless. It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Martin Molin, the man who built it all by himself, is a pure genius with incredible musical and engineering skills. I really admire him.

I wanted to do some kind of tribute to it, but I wasn't sure how.

Soon I got an idea about redstone powered note block machine in Minecraft. I had seen some Minecraft note block song covers made with note block editor, but I wanted to create machine-like instrument by hand!

So after 3 months of hard work, I'm happy to introduce you my tribute to the Wintergatan Marble Machine! Redstone powered Minecraft note block machine! Made completely by hand, note block editor not used.

Please note that my purpose was not to make it look exactly the same as the original. I just wanted to make it look like some kind of machine.

Hope you like it! If you did, please like and share! :)

  • INSANE Marble Run Race With 5 Elevators!

    11:53

This is the largest recorded marble run in any house ever. I could have made it longer by added funnels but i didn't want it to be too boring. Overall, almost 12 minutes of useable footage and about 12-15 hours or so of work.

When I say this was a pain to work on, it really was a pain to work on. I started by working on the lego section on the stairs. That went pretty smoothly with nothing to worry about. Then I filled in the rest of that side of the staircase with marble run and tested to see if the Skyrail would fit on the trim of my stairs. It did, so I added it on and put up the elevator without any pipes, so just tape.
Day 2 of work and things were already going a little south. The elevator had collapsed, but I decided to leave it be until filming day. on this day I believe I worked on the opposite side of the stairs and evening all of the pieces out (which is tough for the brand I used). I then connected this side to another elevator. My goal was to raise the marble high enough to get it over to the TV stand for another section. Once the elevator was up, I added in the clear tracks along the wall.
Day 3 of work and the clear tracks collapsed overnight. I put them back up and completed the skyrail station on the TV stand all the way through.
Day 4 and the clear tracks fell once again. I left them down this time and decided to fix them on filming day. I set up the cardboard zig zag all the way to the treadmill on this day. I had a few ideas going but I didn't use them yet.
Day 5 and the skyrail on the couch collapsed because of the pillows. I redid the pillows and added a little bit of support so they wouldn't fall again. I added the 2 elevators after the treadmill and worked on the track leading to the jump and roll across the green bedding. The jump was an idea I had as soon as I realized that the green bedding would be perfect for a marble to roll across. I then use cardboard to run the marble back across the bedding and into an elevator.
Day 6 is when I finished the end of the marble run. I set up the final elevator and all of the finishing skyrail. The idea was to make the final section as compact as possible, and I think that it stayed pretty compact. It was a bit tough weaving it through the existing run by in the end everything worked out pretty well.
Filming day hit and it was more work than I expected. I put up the elevator on the stairs using pipes and tape and knocked down the skyrail a few times throughout the day. I added onto the marble run all the way to the top of my kitchen, finishing the run from start to finish. I set up the clear tracks and did some testing. I had to adjust a lot of the track pieces, spend some time fixing the elevators, and lost a few marbles from falling off of the track. When I started filming, it took about 20 tries before I finally filmed a run where the marbles finished. Even in this run the marbles needed a little help, but I was not going to spend forever filming and filming with the small probability that all of the marbles will finish without assistance.
This project is easily the biggest marble run I have ever done. I wouldn't say this is bigger or better than my 3 story marble run, but it definitely beats it in length and work time. This run took a lot of time, so be sure to like the video and leave a comment. If you aren't, be sure to subscribe so you never miss another marble run or race!

  • Testing the Better Marble Gates with 5000 Marbles - Marble Machine X #145

    33:40

On a whim I came up with the idea to try to drop 10000 marbles to check the reliability of the new Marble Machine X Marble Gates. After this test I realized that this is a really great method to measure my progress. I will keep doing these tests each week, trying to get the number of dropped marbles up and the numbers of failed marbles down. Things feel different in the studio now, it's like the machine is showing itself to me, it's telling me what it needs me to do, haha :) Enjoy!
